The influence of Media

Waves rush forward, crash, and quickly recede to begin the cycle again as I watched this happen it made me think about the area of MEDIA.

Nowadays we are constantly bombarded with media telling us of tragic news stories, the effects of horrifying natural disasters, and how we should be feeling about those things, just like strong waves hitting the shore.

During my School of Communication Foundations we learned more in-depth about media. The teaching week really confronted me about my intake of media and my knowledge of current events.
To be honest I would not say I am the most up to date person when it comes to the news and what is happening all around the world. I try to be at least somewhat aware, however, default to the excuses of “it is all too depressing” or “what could I really do about this”. Feelings of hopelessness begin to slip in, but then I remember that I can do something about all this.
I can pray!
Prayer is one of the most effective things you can do when you are tuned into the media. I realised whether I am reading a newspaper, watching the news, or checking social media outlets, I can pray. As Christ followers we are called to be strong and courageous. We are children of God and Jesus even said in John 14:14 “Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” The bible also says “And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” Matthew 16:19

While reflecting on the previously mentioned bible verses I came up with some questions that can be helpful when intaking media. These questions are meant to help with identifying how to effectively pray.

-What is the problem?
-Who is involved?
-Are there any biblical principles that apply to this situation?
-Is there a characteristic of God that needs to be revealed to bring change?
-What is God’s heart in this situation, how does he feel about the people or problem?

When we are more informed about what is going on in the world around us we are better equipped to work with God in bringing his kingdom to earth. I hope to be more aware as I catch up on media and news stories and I look forward to seeing change begin to happen through prayer.

I'm Kelcie, I like people, baking, summer weather, the ocean, and Jesus!

Here's a bible verse that inspires me:  Mark 10:28-30

Peter said to him, "We have left everything to follow you!""I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.
